Did you know I have a podcast? Listen to it here!

One of the skills needed behind a freelancer’s success is the ability to work fast, and wait.

Like sure, time management, good communication, excellent work — those are all necessary. But so much of freelancing is in the undertones of waiting. You may have this preconceived knowledge of freelancers being risky, flaky and more.

But did you know freelancers deal with flaky, inconsistent clients all the time? That’s what cold pitching does in many cases, weeds out the firm offers and clears people from the board who aren’t fully interested.

And freelancer’s do that everyday, if not every week. I think freelancing gives job candidates a bit of an edge, not only are they able to create and manage their own project timelines, but they can be effective workers within weird or limited time constraints. They have to be clear communicators (100% client satisfaction otherwise they wouldn’t have any income, LOL) and good at what they do.

Maybe you skipped that first part, but let me explain it again: freelancers deal with risky, flaky clients everyday. They have people ghost them after contracts are signed, folks who always ask about rates and never follow through, and they still are committed to their work because they’re really good at what they do.

I’ve had my fair share of interviews in the past 6 months, and only ONE recruiter made the connection that being a freelancer had taught me invaluable project management skills.

I was surprised I didn’t have to sit and explain why being a freelancer gave me an advantage over other candidates. Not only do I know how to manage my own project lifecycle, but I’m an exceptional communicator through it because…uhhh…I have to be!

Being a freelancer means being an executive assistant, project manager, content creator, human resources and strategic director all in one hub. If you’re considering hiring a freelancer in your next role — what’s got you hesitating to take the plunge?
