In an effort to write more love letters to my genderfree//full//queer community — I was inspired to write this post about nonbinary folks deserving love.

People often get so tied up in understanding every nuance of our being that they forget how important radical acceptance and unconditional love are in this mix.

You don’t have to understand the whole gender spectrum to understand this person is worthy of your love and support!

For my genderqueeroes — this is for you.

32 reasons why nonbinary people deserve love

Because nonbinary folks’ gender exceeds the expanse of a binary universe

Because our gender is not a transition or stepping stone in any direction

Because nonbinary as a gender did not start and will not end with white people at its center — it is beyond and outside of the clutches of white supremacy

Because we choose to embrace uncertainty in our being for certainty in our future

Because what we’ve found outweighs what we’ve lost or released

Because being nonbinary isn’t hard, but being around cisgender people is

Because we have the power and audacity to imagine gender in the future unconstrained by society

Because nonbinary parents raise gender-expansive children and break cycles of misinformation

Because nonbinary individuals don’t owe anyone an explanation of their self

Because nonbinary people are artists and singers and dancers and poets and teachers and lawyers

Because one-day nonbinary people won’t have to give a presentation about their gender to come out

Because nonbinary people are funny

Because some nonbinary people get gender-affirming surgeries, and some never do — and that’s okay

Because nonbinary people are finding new ways to educate others

Because being genderqueer is not only an experience, but a state of mind, and a belief

Because being nonbinary is not about clothes and appearances — but about our hearts and minds

Because there are nonbinary adults, children, teenagers, and elders who are all challenging gender norms

Because genderqueer folks have persevered through the centuries

Because white cisgender historians have tried to erase nonbinary and transgender individuals from our past

Because nonbinary people are entrepreneurs

Because no matter how we found love in the past, we are still nonbinary

Because cisgender people don’t understand how exhausting it is to be “valid” all the time

Because nonbinary people are curious

Because nonbinary people are fat and queer and disabled and Black and Indigenous

Because nonbinary people intersect with every queer identity

Because nonbinary people are nerds (affectionately)

Because nonbinary people are often alone and isolated from each other

Because too many genderqueer children thought, “I am the only one like this”, and they were wrong

Because too many cisgender parents ignored their children’s autonomy and need for consent to gender them at will

Because nonbinary people create and inspire where others see no opportunities for change

Because nonbinary people are re-writing a story we were told as truth when it was really just a fable all along.

Because nonbinary people understand cis-hetero-normativity does not end with their existence and are willing to challenge it every day.
